A pet health certificate for travel is an official document, completed by a veterinarian after examining your pet, confirming your dog or cat is healthy and meets the entry rules of the place you are going. Depending on the destination, it may also need proof of rabies vaccination, a microchip number or other tests. At Promontory Animal Hospital, we complete these certificates at our clinic in Chilliwack, working from your destination’s official requirements.
International travel and the Canada-US border
We help with both. Every destination sets its own rules, and airlines often add requirements of their own, so no two trips are quite the same.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) publishes pet export requirements for each country, and the destination’s government has the final word. Bring those requirements to your appointment and we will work through them with you. For many countries, the completed certificate must also be endorsed by the CFIA before you leave, so build that step into your timeline.
Start early: timing matters
Most travel paperwork is time-sensitive. Some certificates must be issued within a set window before departure, while other steps, like a microchip placed before a rabies vaccine, have to happen in a particular order and well ahead of the trip.
Some countries also ask for a rabies titre, a blood test that shows your pet’s rabies protection. We offer rabies titre testing, such as FAVN, typically for international travel requirements. Call us as soon as your travel dates are booked.
